Quality mountain grazed, grass-fed happy lamb!

Black Mountain Lamb believe in a farming approach which creates a happy, healthy flock and produces tastier lamb.

Located in the Brecon Beacons National Park, in the rugged foothills of the Black Mountain, we breed a flock of Brecknock Hill Cheviots. Producing high quality meat, we supply lamb directly to discerning chefs, restaurants and butchers. Contact us to find out more.

The Breed

The ancestry of the Brecknock Hill Cheviot can be traced back to the Cheviot hills, border country between England and Scotland, as early as the 1300’s.  Introduced to Brecon Beacons some 400 years ago, this robust and energetic breed adapted to the local environment to become ‘the’ sheep breed of this area.

Over recent decades many farmers have chosen to focus on quicker finishing continental breeds which demand more intensive systems. But we prefer to continue with the Brecknock Hill Cheviots which thrive naturally in this terrain and climate.

The Meat

A medium to small breed, the Brecknock Hill Cheviot is known for a quality carcass. The neck is of good length, the back straight and fleshy, the ribs produce a good loin and the hind a fine rump.

Grazing the native grasses and mineral rich herbs of this area, the Cheviot lamb produces a sweeter, tender meat full of taste and character.

There’s nothing quite like quality lamb from Wales, a true delicacy!

Animal Husbandry

Following centuries old local farming practice, our flock spend the summer freely roaming their tradtional heft on the vast expanse of the Black Mountain, a remote area of natural beauty. The rest of the year they are reared on our hill pasture just below the mountain boundary with additional home-produced hay or silage during the tougher months.

Giving them time to enjoy life and mature slowly, we try to slaughter lambs from eight to ten months in age. Using a small local abattoir minimises stress, preserving meat quality and taste.

Only prize winning rams are bred with the Black Mountain Lamb flock, maintaining the Brecknock Hill Cheviot breed lineage.

Black Mountain Lamb prides itself in embracing ethical and forward thinking animal husbandry practices.

The Area

Black Mountain Lamb comes from the more remote and wild north-west part of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The Black Mountain presides over this scenic landscape, a beautiful mixture of verdant pasture, ancient woodland, and fast flowing rivers.

Black Mountain Lamb is based at Blaensawdde, the ancient hill farm in the famous legend of Llyn y Fan Fach, with its connection to the renowned medieval herbalists - the Physicians of Myddfai.

The area is home to many species of wildlife, including brown hare, otters, buzzards, ravens and kestrels. The magnificent red kite found sanctuary and survived in our woods when they were almost driven to extinction. Our environmentally friendly farming approach is designed to respect and support the local wildlife.
